Same happened to computer chess in the 80ies. Clever small SW was leading the tournaments, until Ken Thompson could persuade IBM to throw hardware at it, Big Blue. This win was shortsighted. HW didn't scale and nobody profited from it. SW did, esp. reinforcement learning.
