Is there any research or frontier labs experimenting with designing these systems outside of the human program context?

I wonder if we are so advanced as we think that these constructs (dreaming), are the right ones for improving intelligence in a program that does not need to be modelled after us or constrained by what evolution gave us.

i think (from a business perspective) it is desirable to mimic human behaviour because human is a familiar 'interface' for users. whether they will get there is another story of course...
