> This AI-generated story was true, in the sense that it was an aggregate of real human experiences, as derived from the LLM’s training data. There wasn’t a real, named human being undergoing the pain and loss but, sadly, there are such people.

This seems like a crazy take. If you make something up, but it's "the kind of thing that happens"- that isn't true.

I think fair enough that the author doesn't mind that, but I'd bet a lot that they're in the minority not to be bothered by articles that describe something specific that never happened as if it did (AI generated or otherwise)

Depends on what three purpose of the writing was. There's an entire genre of work that is entirely imagined works. Fiction, as a category, is quite popular, even. It's when it leaks back to the real world that there's issue. If I tell a heartwarming story about a mother and her daughter going on a trip together and it makes people feel better, who cares if it's entirely fictional? It's when that mother or daughter is someone you know, or is someone famous, that it affects anything. Aka go read /r/AmItheAsshole/ for entertainment value, but don't have it need to be true for it to give you feels.

I watched the Spiderman movie the other day and it provoked real emotions in me despite the story being totally fictional.

I think they clarify later that the "as if it did" is indeed what bothers them
