They are kind of difficult to recharge using solar panels. They also smell bad and are noisy.

Of course, but that was not the point. Evidently there are ways to store energy that are quite safe, so you can't conclude that all forms of storage are inherently unsafe.

Well diesel can catch fire in certain circumstances and can do a huge amount of damage when it does. I'm not sure it's that much safer than some types of batteries...
