Makes sense, like "knowing" what a something looks like from memory, and actually having a recent short term memory reference. One is an idea that you'll recognise the real deal from, the other, is close enough to reconstruct a passable version of the real deal from. The former, is all but useless for describing to another what that means or comparing things in isolation in a faithful way.
