Macs run macOS. That’s how they are sold, that’s the deal, vertical integration and all that. Annoying to get this sentiment brought up over and over. Don’t buy a Mac if you prefer another OS, complain to other hardware vendors to get their stuff together.

How is this sentiment annoying to you? People want Linux on good hardware, how is that annoying to you?

Apple sells what it says on the tin. Vertical integration, macOS. If you want to hack the HW, do, but don't blame Apple, blame yourself.

They can blame whoever they want, and unless you're familiar with the hardware then you have no authority to overrule them.

> Macs run macOS.

They run other things, too. There's no valid technical reason it can't or shouldn't, and Apple deserves the scrutiny if they won't bring macOS up to parity with Linux. Modern macOS is legitimately terrible, and ~100% to blame for why Macs are shunned for HPC, on-prem and other professional applications.

They sell Macs with macOS. That's what you pay for and that's the deal. You know that jumping in. You want to run another OS, that's on you, Apple owes you nothing.

Apple owes me a usable experience once they stop supporting the hardware.

If you think that laptops deserve to become e-waste when the OEM says so, then your opinion can be safely discarded.

There are hundreds of millions of professionals in the world who need a computer that works for their work and daily life and aren't server admins or software developers. Please let us have the Macs in peace. We only have this option, while you have dozens of different PC makers for your Linux.

but nobody is trying to take that away from you? having a reliable linux distro for apple hardware couldn't affect you in any way
[–] carlosjobim 2 days ago
"bring macOS up to parity with Linux" sounds like a direction of development which wouldn't be very desirable for people like me.

unless the OS was behind on features that wouldn't affect you if they were there
[–] bigyabai 1 day ago
There is not a single Linux feature you have named that would impede your day-to-day workflow.

Methinks the lady doth protest too much.

Linux users are like pickup truck drivers going to every motorcycle meeting to walk around complaining that motorcycles should be more like trucks. Different four strokes for different folks.

Mac users are like motorcycle drivers petitioning their city to replace the highway lanes with bike lanes. You are a second-class citizen here, having forgotten what roads are actually used for.

I'm sorry that you're absorbed in your fantasy, but it's not my job to accommodate it.

Terrible? I love it. Since 84.

They run other things, too

What other things outside of containers or iPad apps?

> Terrible? I love it.

You're part of a minority.

> What other things outside of containers or iPad apps?

Linux with fully native Vulkan drivers, for one.

[–] stasomatic 1 day ago
No offense, but you are the minority. Go buy a Framework, no? I get my Macs for macOS, not Linux. I've got other things for Linux, RPis, NUCs. If you got a Mac for Linux, that's on you, not Apple.
[–] bigyabai 18 hours ago
I didn't make a mistake. Macs are a vast minority of the PC market share, and you belong to that minority if you use macOS.

Apple eventually stops OEM support for Macs, which means that support via an alternative operating system is a foremost imperative.
