At this point I’m resigning myself to think that we’ve just gotta wait for some people to die. It feels very dramatic and glib (no pun intended lol) and whatever to say, but at this point it feels like there’s a certain hostility in some parts to changing anything from the platonic ideals of however computing happened to work in 2004. “Oh we don’t need to mess with it!”

How did you arrive at that conclusion? If anything, this vulnerability happened because someone decided to change the behaviour of crypt() without fully understanding the consequences. This specific vulnerability did not exist in 2004.

I agree with him. I only managed to get asterisks enabled by default in sudo because sudo-rs isn't owned by people who have decided that the 70s was the perfect decade and nothing should ever change. And look at the insane pushback when it did!

I can't even get an obvious UX improvement through PAM because they like it broken.

I think this is a bit unfair. The way I see it, a lot of people are saying that changing breaks lots of old stuff, and risks complete fragmentation. Those are real costs to change. It might still be worth it, but let's not pretend that everyone is resisting change just because it's change.

All I see is sausage makers advocating for a sausage-based diet.
