With China's Announcement 48 (export restrictions on AI), I'm not sure how much longer that will continue for open-weight models. It includes a number of areas of biomedicine as covered technologies. It's not clear if a model capable of doing such biomedical research would be considered as Prohibited/Restricted from Export.

Open weight models that fall under Restricted get an automatic license. The only prohibited category that applies to model weights is training on "core national data", meaning specific non public datasets designated by the state. Everything else is about full agent systems.

Do you have a source for that? I hadn't realized that was the case.

The more interesting export out of China is their prohibition against companies that provide users with an emotional relationship with an AI entity.
