At this point, changes to major programming languages have to adapt to a world in which AI systems generate and change much of the code. C++ contracts may be good or bad, but they are from before strong AI coding systems. So it's time to rethink.

And we have no idea what AI systems will be doing in 2027.

How would you begin to form a plan of how you'll rethink if you can't even see into next year? Isn't it beneficial not to change the languages too much because there's so much training data for the current revisions? AI does not need to be catered to, that is the whole point and why it is useful.

We're going to need languages which both humans and AIs can read and write. We don't know what those look like yet. Contracts aren't a bad idea, but C++ has just become too big. Even people who used to be C++ language lawyers have said that.

Not to defend the particular proposal at issue here, but my sense is that contract-like things synergize quite well with AI coding, for the same reasons automated tests and static types do.

A lot of folks, many of them our most capable programmers, are fighting the last war. It’s like they think AI is going away and we’ll all work like it’s 2019 again.

It looks like 2027 orb2028 will be the year when everyone gets so fed up with AI that those "features" will be forced to retreat from under everyone's nose. The stuff will not go away, but there is AI fatigue and it is slowly approaching a tipping point.

What makes it go away? People can reject datacenters, AI slop(to the degree they can detect it) and AI search results, but what stops the wave of automation coming for SWEs and IT workers? We are the least able to resist. AI already does a better job than the majority of us. It is, even with much higher token costs, vastly cheaper. So what shoves it back into the box?

It won't go away, but people ar getting tired of the UX everywhere force feeding AI "features" to them.

The hatred of data centers and AI is partly a proxy for the working class' growing anger at the ruling class. Crony and late-stage capitalism squeezing every last drop out of people can only go on for so long.

Wow. I’m surprised at the amount of downvotes. Are people really that in denial?

That surprised me, too. This was marked down to -4.

Unreal 6 will ditch C++. So, be prepared. And given the current vuln in Ruby On Rails and ImageMagick, better if the convert everything from IM/GM to FFMPEG to Rust. Oh, and libvirt+Qemu, for sure. That's granted.
